The latest Google algorithm update: How will Google Pigeon affect the SERPS?

Pigeon Algorithm

Pigeon Algorithm

Google’s algorithm update (dubbed ‘Pigeon’) was released in the US in July and has recently been introduced to the UK. Like other algorithm updates, Google is tight-lipped about the full implications but states that its latest iteration aims to better regulate local search queries as well as the search capabilities of Google Maps.

In response to challenges about it’s local search results, Google has placed more emphasis on review sites. In December, Yelp claimed that Google was over-riding Yelp’s authority and instead positioning Google reviews higher. The Pigeon algorithm has countered this claim by reinstating Yelp’s high ranking placement. Similarly, other review sites have benefited from the update such as Trip Advisor, Urban Spoon, Open Table and other like-sites. For example, if you type in “pizza places Bristol”, the SERP appears more as it might have 12-months ago.

The Pigeon algorithm also intends to improve neighbourhood definition of “informal spaces,” enabling more accurate location targeting and Google Maps accuracy for users in densely populated areas.

Have there been any negative implications?

As with the other Google algorithm updates, the specifics of Pigeon have not been comprehensive. This means that whilst there have been some negative repercussions published, they have not been synonymous with all researchers.

Some highlighted drawbacks noted have included the bias between industries. Many articles have cited that whilst companies pertaining to education, hospitality and food have seen growth in traffic and page ranking, search terms relating to mould removal, real estate and insurance have shown notable losses.

What does it mean for your business?

The Pigeon algorithm update underlines the value of both locality and website authority; it’s therefore imperative that your local SEO strategy is in focus. Traditional web signals such as local citations and page authority will continue to help website ranking, as will a localised strategy for businesses based in multiple regions.
